About Lesson
Enzyme Inhibitors
Enzyme inhibitors are substances which can reduce the rate of enzyme-controlled reactions or completely stop the reaction.
Types of Inhibitors
(a) Competitive inhibitors
Compete with a substrate for the active sites of an enzyme.
They bind temporarily to the enzyme hence slow down the rate of reaction.
(b) Non-competitive inhibitors
Do not compete for the active site of an enzyme.
They bind either temporarily or permanently on different active site.
This distorts the active sites therefore the normal substrates cannot bind.
