About Lesson

Examples of specialized plant cells

Root hair cell

Has an extension/root-hair to increase the surface area for absorption of water and mineral salts

Function: Absorption of water and mineral salts from soil to the plant.

Palisade cells

They are numerous, elongated and contain numerous chloroplasts to trap optimum light for photosynthesis;

Function: Contain chloroplasts that are sites for photosynthesis.

Guard cell

Modification:

  • Have thicker inner walls and thinner outer walls to allow them to stretch unevenly when turgid to open stomata;
  • Have numerous chloroplasts, to carry out photosynthesis, forming sugars to control the opening and closing of stomata;

Function

  • Control the opening and closing of stoma
