Gaseous Exchange in Fish

Fish use gills for gaseous exchange.

Structure and function of the gill

The gill consists of:

  1. Gill bar
  2. Gill rakers
  3. Gill filaments

Gill filament

Adaptations of the gill filament to gaseous exchange

  • Thin epithelium to shorten diffusion distance.
  • Highly vascularised for faster transport of respiratory gases.
  • Long to increase surface area for gaseous exchange.
