Diabetes mellitus (sweet urine)

The pancreas may fail to produce insulin at all or may produce insufficient insulin.

Causes

  • Excessive consumption of alcohol impairing the pancreas.
  • Hereditary factors.
  • Diseases affecting the pancreas thus malfunctioning.

This leads to hyperglycaemia (high blood glucose levels).

The excess glucose has to be eliminated by the kidneys.

Symptoms

  • Production of sweet urine –
  • Frequent passing of urine.
  • Thirstiness with dry lips due to dehydration.
  • Loss of weight.
  • Low resistance to diseases.

Control and management

  • Daily intravenous dose of insulin.
  • Regulated carbohydrates diet.
  • Avoid alcohol.
  • Seek medical attention for any disease affecting the pancreas and liver.
