Introduction
Living things utilize nutrients and eliminate waste products.
Some of the common waste products include:
- Carbon (IV) oxide
- Excess water
- Nitrogenous waste products
- Mineral salts
- Drugs
- Hormones
- Bile pigments
Terminology
- Excretion – is the process by which living organisms separate and eliminate metabolic waste products from their bodies.
- Homeostasis – is the maintenance of a constant state of the internal environment of the living organism in order to provide optimum conditions for body metabolism.
- Egestion – is the removal of undigested and indigestible food substances through the anus.
- Secretion – is the release of useful substances produced by cells; e.g. hormones, enzymes
