Respiratory Quotient (RQ)

RQ is the ratio between the volume of carbon (IV) oxide produced and the volume of oxygen used during respiration.

Carbohydrates have an RQ of 1.

Lipids have an RQ of 0.7.

Proteins have an RQ of 0.9.

Significance of RQ

RQ gives information about the

  • type of substrate being respired.
  • type of respiration taking place.
