About Lesson
Intermittent curve
In arthropods, growth takes place at intervals hence show an intermittent growth curve.
This is due to the presence of an exoskeleton that inhibit continuous growth.
Rapid growth occurs only after the shedding of the exoskeleton a process known as moulting or ecdysis.
However, cell division continues to take place during the inter-moult phase but the expansion of tissues is limited by the unshed exoskeleton.
