About Lesson
MEIOSIS
It is the type of cell division that gives rise to four reproductive cells (gametes) each with half the chromosome number of the parent cell.
Involves two divisions of the parent cell resulting into four daughter cells.
Each daughter cell has half the number of chromosomes (haploid–n) as the parent cell.
It takes place in reproductive organs (gonads) during gamete formation in organisms.
Meiosis consists of two successive divisions;
(a) Meiosis I
(b) Meiosis II
The parent cell splits into two (First Meiotic division) and the products then divide again (Second Meiotic division) resulting to four daughter cells.
In the first meiotic division, homologous chromosomes are separated from each other and go into different cells.
