Population Estimation Methods

The methods used in estimating population depends on the size of the area being studied.

In a small area, the total count method is most applicable.

In a large area, the sampling method applies.

Sampling Methods

A sample is a small number of individuals taken from a habitat representative of the whole population.

Samples are used where the area of study is too large for the total count methods to be used.

Sampling methods include:

  • Quadrat method
  • Line method
  • Belt method
  • Capture-recapture method
