Population

Population is a group of organisms belonging to the same species in a particular habitat e.g. a population of buffaloes in Nakuru National Park.

Characteristics of populations

  • Density – refers to the number of individuals per unit area.
  • Dispersion – it is the spread or distribution of organisms in a habitat.
  • Population – refers to the rate of increase in numbers.

Factors affecting population growth rate

  • Food availability
  • Space
  • Diseases and pests
  • Predators
