About Lesson
Primary and Secondary Growth
The region of growth in plants is found in localized regions called meristems.
Meristems
A meristem is a group of undifferentiated cells in plants, which are capable of continuous mitotic cell division.
Characteristics of meristematic cells
- Have thin cell walls.
- Have dense cytoplasm.
- Lack vacuoles.
- Small in size.
- Cuboid shaped
Meristems are located at the tips of roots and shoots, bases of the internodes and in vascular cambium and cork cambium.
Apical meristems are found at the root and shoot tips, and are responsible for primary growth.
Cambium meristems are responsible for secondary growth.
