Characteristics of Class Insecta

  1. Body is divided into three parts; head, thorax and abdomen.
  2. Have a pair of antennae.
  3. Have 3 pairs of legs.
  4. Have 1 or 2 pairs of wings.

Some are wingless.             

  1. Undergo metamorphosis, which is either complete or incomplete.
  2. Gaseous exchange is through the tracheal system.
  3. Excretion is through Malpighian tubules.
  4. Mouthparts are modified for their mode of feeding e.g. Mandibles, maxillae and labium for biting and chewing and proboscis for sucking.
  5. Have compound eyes.
