Introduction to Ecology

Ecology is the study of the interrelationships of organisms to each other and to their environment.

Environment is the surroundings of an organism i.e. both living (biotic) and non-living (abiotic).

Autecology is the ecological study of a single species.

Synecology is the ecological study of many (different) species.

The knowledge gained from ecology is applied in many spheres of life such as:

  • Sustainable food production.
  • Conservation of natural resources.
  • Pollution control.
  • Control of diseases and pests.
  • Ecotourism
  • Prediction of adverse weather patterns.
  • Population control.
