General characteristics

  1. Their bodies are differentiated into true roots, stems and leaves.

They are non-flowering,

  1. Have a well-defined vascular system.
  2. Have green compound leaves called fronds, which have leaflets called pinna.

The leaf stalk is called rachis.

  1. Have sori (sorus – singular) on the lower side of mature leaves.

Sori contains sporangia that produce spores.

  1. Show alternation of generation.

The sporophyte is dominant over the gametophyte.

The sporophyte is made up or roots, an underground stem called rhizome and leaves called fronds.

The gametophyte is reduced to a small simple structure called prothallus.
