About Lesson

Kingdom Plantae

Comprise of all plants.

General Characteristics

  1. ** Body is differentiated into roots, stems and leaves.
  2. ** Cells have cellulose cell walls.

Most of their cells have chloroplasts.

  1. ** Show alternation of generations

i.e. life cycle consist of gametophyte (gamete producing) and sporophyte (spore producing) generations.

  1. ** Have vascular (transport) tissue.

Phloem translocate manufactured food from the leaves to other parts of the plant.

Xylem conducts water and mineral salts from the roots up the plant.

  1. Are multicellular.

Their cells have membrane bound organelles.

  1. Reproduce both sexually and asexually.

Sexually through the fusion of gametes.

Asexually through vegetative propagation e.g. budding, suckering.

  1. Some are terrestrial or aquatic while others are semi-terrestrial.

Question

What is alteration of generations?

  • the existence in the life cycle of an organism of two or more reproductive modes, e.g. sexual and asexual cycles

Kingdom Plantae is divided into three main divisions;

  • Division Bryophyta
  • Division Pteridophyta
  • Division Spermatophyta
