Etiolation

It is the process that occurs when plants are grown in the dark (low light intensity).

The etiolated plants have long, weak stems; smaller leaves due to longer internodes; and a pale-yellow colour (chlorosis).

Characteristics of an Etiolated Plant

  • Long weak stems/longer internodes.
  • White/light colored stems.
  • Pale-yellow leaves (chlorosis)
  • Smaller leaves.

Causes of Etiolation

Due to low light intensity, more auxins are secreted leading to faster growth/elongation.

Remedy for Etiolation

Exposure to sunlight.
