Necessity of Support and Movement of Plants and Animals

Importance of movement to Plants

  • Enhance fertilisation, when gametes fuse or pollen tube germinates.
  • Enables plants to obtain resources from the environment like water, light and nutrients.
  • Enables plants escape or avoid harmful stimuli like high temperature.

Importance of locomotion to Animals

  • Searching for food, mates and shelter.
  • Escaping danger or unfavourable environmental conditions.

Importance of Support to Plants

  • Exposure of leaves to sunlight and CO2 for photosynthesis.
  • Exposure of flowers to agents of pollination.
  • Exposure of fruits and seeds to agents of dispersal.
  • Enables plants to withstand forces such as wind and gravity that might cause breakage.

Importance of Support to Animals

  • Allows for muscle attachment necessary for locomotion.
  • Support framework protects delicate organs.
