Gene mutation

It is a change in the structure of a gene. Also called point mutation.

It is a result of a change in the chemical nature of the gene.

 

Types of Genetic Mutation

1. Insertion
2. Inversion
3. Deletion
4. Substitution

 

Insertion

Is the addition of an extra base onto an existing DNA strand.

These changes the base sequence.

 

Deletion

Is the loss (removal) of a gene portion.

 

Inversion

Is when a gene portion rotates through 180⁰ and rejoins in a reversed manner. This alters the base sequence.

 

Substitution

Involves replacement of a gene portion with a new one.
