Geographical Distribution of Living Organisms

At one time, the globe was one large continent. However, continental drift took place forming the present day continents. The organisms in these continents were separated and isolated leading to speciation.

Evidence of evolution:

  • Amazon has wild cats; the panthers and jaguars while rainforests in Africa have leopards, lions and cheetahs, in Asia rain forests, there are tigers.
  • Monkeys in Amazon forest have long prehensile tails (elastic) while the ones in Congo forest have long non-prehensile tails since it is the same climate.
  • Before the drift, all mammals were placental but after the drift, all the mammals that drifted to Australia evolved to marsupials that lack a true placenta. Such mammals include kangaroos, koalas and bears. They have a pocket for nursing their young ones.
